A friend gave me a firefighting suit in the mid 1990's. It fascinated me, but I had no idea what I might do with it, so it followed me around for years in a trunk. In the winter of 2002, I stuffed the suit into the back of my car and set off with my cameras for the Southwest. I would ask strangers to pose in the suit, and make humorous images of man-in-landscape. By the time I had been on the road two days, I was convinced the idea was madness, and deeply doubted my own sanity in beginning the trip. Then, on the horizon, in the middle of the nowhere sagebrush desert, the letters of a town appeared in Hollywood-sized proclamation: I stopped right there and took the first serious shot of the series. By January, returning on a loop through Idaho, Utah, and Nevada, I had a dozen solid images and no intention of stopping. Originally titled "One," The Firesuit Series continues to surprise me, and tends to spark conversation and perplexity wherever it goes.
